Afterworld A theme that has created some of the richest of all symbol systems. Egyptian and Tibetan Books of the Dead lay down precise rules for conduct during and after death, and Chinese, Japanese, Mesoamerican, Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu and Christian eschatological texts similarly give guidance, but in less elaborate form. In primitive traditions the afterworld is usually non-judgmental - a happier version of the world as we know it. In ethically distinct afterworlds, the symbolism of bliss or misery is remarkable consistent: paradise lies above the vault of the sky, sparkling with light and harmonious with music; hell lies below - dark, desolate, smoky, putrid and painful.
