Ali Ali was born Cassius Marcellus Clay in Louisville, KY., on Jan 17, 1942. His name was changed when he later joined the Black Muslim religious sect. He began boxing as an amateur at the age of 12. In 1960 he won Amateur Athletic Union, Golden Gloves, and Olympic Games championship. He won a share of the world heavyweight championship on Feb 25, 1964, when he defeated Sonny Liston. On Feb. 6,1967 he outpointed Ernie Terrell, the world Boxing Association champion. Ali was gifted with unusually fast reflexes, excellent coordination, and accurate defensive skills. After Ali joined the Black Muslim he refused, on religious grounds, to be drafted into the armed forces. He was convicted in 1967 of violating the Selective Service Act, barred from boxing, and stripped of his tittle. His conviction was reversed by the United Supreme Court in 1971. . . . Muhammad Ali retired in 1979. He had lost only three decisions in 59 fight. Coming out of retirement, Ali was defeated by champion Larry Holmes in 1980 and by Trevor Berbick in 1981.
