Altar

From a religious standpoint, an altar can have a number of meanings.  It is a place of sacrifice...  It may mean something must die if something else is to live... For example, the ego so that more sincere feelings can manifest.  In addition, the altar may symbolize the wedding of the unconscious and the conscious mind - the union of opposites.  Or it may symbolize the consecration of something you deem sacred.  From: The Hidden Meaning of Dreams (Hamilton-Parker)
