Arm

Instrumental, protective or judgmental force.  A symbol of sovereign power and the active principle in Egyptian, Hindu and Buddhist iconography - and of God in the Christian Trinity.  Omnipotent gods often have several arms and carry specific symbols of their various functions.  To the Bambara of West Africa the forearm is a symbol of the spirit, a link between humanity and God.  The most universal symbolic gesture of the arm is the submissive raising of both arms, signaling both surrender and an appeal for mercy, justice or, in a religious context, diving grace.
