Food and Drink

Food represents nourishment.   In a literal sense, that would be nourishment for the body; in a symbolic sense, it would be nourishment for the psyche or soul.  Often, the type of food involved will give a clue to its symbolism: beverages can quench a thirst for knowledge; grains may symbolize the "seed" or "germ" of an idea or thought; sweets can represent something tasty, but not necessarily substantial.  Many foods may be considered a source of comfort or reassurance. Mythology and folklore often show food in a transformational light:  the apple in the garden of Eden, Persephone and the pomegranate, Alice drinking and eating in Wonderland.  Food can also represent temptation or something forbidden.
