Fountain The life force, and by extension rejuvenation or immortality. Also a symbol of the cosmic center, the divine spirit, purification, inspiration and knowledge. Both Christian and Islamic traditions place a fountain or spring at the center of paradise, at the foot of the Tree of Life, from which streams flow to the four cardinal points - an influential image for the layout of future garden and church architecture. The fountain's "pure river of water" (Revelation 22:1) was equated with the Father and Son, so that the fountain became a symbol not only of purity but of revelation and redemption. In Norse myth, the god Odin gives one of his eyes for a draught of water from the Fountain of Knowledge flowing from the world axis, the tree Yggdrasil. Greek Orphic tradition held that bypassing the Fountain of Forgetfulness and drinking from the Fountain of Memory at the entrance to Hades would ensure immortality. The Fountain of Youth, a popular theme in art, dates back at least to the Roman myth of the go Jupiter turning Juventas into a fountain. An intertwining theme is the rejuvenating effects of love, hence the frequent appearance of Cupid presiding over this fountain, and the sexual symbolism of its jetting water. The sealed fountain is a Christian image of virginity. Eastern legends located the Fountain of Life in the far north, although Florida in the US one seemed a likely site to Europeans.
