Voodoo

To bring the dead back to life is just one of the well known stereotypes of the Voodoo religion.  Possessed mambos dancing wildly, evil houngans sticking pins into voodoo dolls for ultimate revenge against their enemies, the dead brought back to life as zombies -- completely under the control of their masters, human sacrifice to demonic gods, worship of pagan idols are all elements of a Hollywood synthesized religion which was produced to attract viewers, eager to be frightened to death.

The Truth Behind Voodoo: The Vodun Religion

Vodun, meaning "god," has a unique history originating in Africa and expanding to Haiti and the United States, among other places. Vodun originated around the 18th and 19th centuries among the Yoruba people in West Africa. Even though the Vodun religion began in Africa, it eventually spread to Haiti, the United States, and the West Indies.
