Weaving An ancient symbol of cosmic creation, conceived as a continuing process in which temporal events are woven in an ever-changing pattern on a changeless warp. The cosmic symbolism of weaving goes back at least to the Babylonian weaver-goddess Ishtar. Individual destinies are woven into the pattern as long as the thread is not cut by one of the Fates. Weaving represents cohesion, the constant interplay of the male warp and female weft, as in Chinese thought. In Buddhism, the process symbolizes the weaving of an illusory reality.
